Bar Bites – Aachen, Germany – Hotel Novotel
When in Rome…errr, ummm, when in Germany, Aachen Germany to be exact, eat and drink as the Germans do! Well, that’s what we planned to do anyway. Our plan was to try some new things and so far, we’re off to a good start!
Carpaccio:
Cured, very thin slices of beef with parmesan and pine nuts, served over a bit of lettuce with a little vinegar dressing for good measure. This paired well with a cold Franziskaner Troub Beer and some crusty bread.
Wild Goulash, speatzle, brussel sprouts:
Now, on to the main dish; Venison tips in a rich gravy, commonly known as Goulash, served with spaetzle and crispy brussel sprouts. Now, if you’re wondering what spaetzle is, you’ll now need to wonder no longer…it’s a glorious German starch! And let me tell you, the Germans know how to do their starches! It’s basically a loose pasta dough, pressed through a sieve into boiling water that ends up as little chewy, soft pasta bits that you toss in a little butter and maybe some parmesan and use as a side dish, and to sop up a little bit of the gravy! The brussel sprouts were small and tender, not bitter at all and the perfect balance to the rich meat dish. Overall, a great dish with a glass of Spanish Rioja.
Cheese plate, star fruit, grapes, blue cheese, brie, gouda:
What better way to end the meal than with a little bit of cheese and fruit? This plate had the standards; gorgonzola, brie, and some aged gouda, but with the fruit and seedy bread, it was the perfect end to a nice meal, and just very Euro of us!
The moral of the story? Eat, drink and enjoy every moment and adventure of your life!

The food looks absolutely delicious. I grew up with German food and my mom loved the gravy and put it on just about anything and everything. My other half recently made homemade spaetzle for our Oktoberfest Feast and it was oh so good. Have a Great Weekend:)
